Your Google Business Profile (GBP) is the biggest map-pack ranking lever you control. Yet most local businesses set it up once and never touch it again. Here is the 12-step optimization I run for every client.
The 12-step GBP checklist
- Claim and verify the profile.
- Set the correct primary category.
- Add all relevant secondary categories.
- Complete every service with descriptions.
- Write a keyword-rich business description.
- Add your service areas.
- Upload geo-tagged, high-quality photos.
- Turn on messaging and set booking links.
- Seed the Q&A section with real questions.
- Post weekly updates, offers, and events.
- Request reviews after every completed job.
- Respond to every review with keywords.
The two that move the needle most
If you only do two things, do these: categories and reviews. The right category tells Google exactly what you do, and a steady stream of keyword-rich reviews signals prominence. Together they explain most of the ranking gap between the top 3 and everyone else.
Treat your profile like a living asset, not a one-time setup, and it will quietly become your best-performing marketing channel.
